Intellectual Property China

China is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Paris Convention of Industrial Property, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the Madrid Trademark Convention, the Universal Copyright Convention and the Geneva Phonograms Convention. However, China has produced many intellectual property headaches for the United States. When it comes to China, the United States government number one concern with their economy is the protection of intellectual property rights. A roundtable discussion about intellectual property rights, featuring many U.S. investors, is sponsored by the American Embassy. According to the United States Trade Representative, China does a very poor job of enforcing intellectual property rights. This has led to copyrights, inventions, brands, and trade secrets being stolen on a regular basis. Apparently, the Chinese are starting to take notice of this major problem and they are addressing it. Effectively fixing this problem would help improve the way China is viewed by the rest of the world's nations.

Fast Facts

  • China is one of the only countries in the world that has lackadaisical intellectual property protection policies in place.
  • With such a large population, it would be wise for China to keep a close eye when it comes to protecting intellectual property.
