World Intellectual Property

Established in 1967, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is one of 16 specialized agencies within the United Nations. Its goal is to encourage activity and protect and promote intellectual property worldwide. WIPO's international intellectual property system is an easy to access and balanced one that is known for rewarding creativity. This system has set out to stimulate innovation and it has continually contributed to the world's economic development. Currently, the organization is going through a strategic realignment process. Some of the steps that have been set out to achieve this comprehensive effort include dealing with global issues that affect intellectual property, offering information and analysis of intellectual property through a world reference source, and maintaining clear channels of communication between WIPO and its member states and stakeholders. With its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, WIPO currently has administered 24 international treaties and has 184 member states. WIPO also has a bi-monthly magazine that is available in English, French, and Spanish.
