Do you always need to hire an attorney to file a patent or can I do it myself?

Question:  Do I have to have an attorney file my patent for me?

Response: The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) does not require that you have an attorney to file a patent; however, it is strongly recommended that you retain a patent attorney or an agent to help you in the patent process.  The reason for this is very simple - the patent application process is very tedious and difficult to undertake if you are not familiar with the procedures to follow.  On the other hand, a patent attorney or agent is specifically trained in the steps to take, and those to avoid, to successfully have your patent granted.  You will need to have your idea researched and the application properly generated to increase the likelihood of having the patent granted without any staffs in the process.
